Must-Have Skills for an Electrical Engineer Resume

By John Ternieden - April 15th, 2022
Resume Tips

According to a recent report by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment of electrical and electronics engineers in this country is projected to grow seven percent from 2020 to 2030. That translates to about 22,700 openings each year, on average, for the decade.

Simply stated, now is a great time for anyone who is looking to get into electrical engineering or who is searching for electric engineer jobs.

What Does an Electric Engineer Do?

In case you did not know, Electrical engineers are tasked with designing, developing, testing, and supervising the manufacturing of electrical equipment.

That means anytime you see a practical, real-world device like a cell phone or computer, chances are it was designed by an electrical engineer. And given how prevalent these real-world devices are becoming, you can see just how important the role is and why it is continuing to grow.

How to Become an Electrical Engineer?

Ever wonder how electrical engineering jobs stack up to other careers?

Electrical engineering can be a very rewarding career, both personally and financially. The average electric engineer salary in the United States is around $100,420, with some electrical engineer salaries reaching more than $160,000 a year.

Given the potential financial rewards, many are seeking to join this growing and exciting field. But employers are looking for candidates who are qualified, both with the proper skills as well as the proper educational criteria.

Those interested should pursue an electric engineering degree – which is being offered at more and more universities across the United States.

What Must-Have Skills Should You Include in an Electrical Engineer Resume?

There are several ways to properly customize an electrical engineer resume, or any resume for that matter, to increase your chances of getting hired. And perhaps the most effective way to do so is to show that you have the right hard and soft skills for the job at hand.

But that begs the question, how do you determine which skills to include?

When trying to decide which skills to include in your resume, start by reviewing the electric engineer job description for the position you want.

It is likely that the description will include several skills that the ideal candidate should have. It is also important to not just scatter the skills throughout your resume haphazardly but to include them in a way that actually shows you possess the skill. Try reviewing a few electric engineer resume samples to see how others have done it.

If the electric engineer job description is short on skills, here are 12 must-have skills you will want to make sure are in your electrical engineer resume.

  1. Problem Solving
  2. AutoCAD
  3. Communication
  4. Electrical Design
  5. Critical Thinking
  6. Basic Circuit Knowledge
  7. Electronic Trouble Shooting
  8. Numeracy
  9. Programming
