If you’ve ever tried to make a doctor appointment and found you can’t get seen for a week or more, you understand the frustration that brought about ZocDoc.
Founded in 2007, ZocDoc is a service that lets you instantly book an appointment with a nearby doctor in your insurance network; either online or using an app. Today, more than six million patients use ZocDoc nationwide to find and connect with 50 different types of specialists.
That kind of growth takes a strong team to help lead the way.
Currently, ZocDoc has 650 employees working out of three offices in New York, Phoenix and Pune, India. We asked Netta Samroengraja, ZocDoc CFO & CPO, (Chief People Officer) for some insight into the company’s hiring practices. Check it out:
He advised us to look for the best people with strong intrinsic qualities and not to compromise. We took that advice to heart, and it set the tone for our future hiring agenda and led to “Great People” becoming a core value.
We set the precedent early on to look for high-caliber people to add to our team, always aiming to hire those who are better than ourselves. This hasn’t changed despite our rapid growth.
We hire for intrinsics - intellect, motivation, passion, personality, agility - over experience. We hire people who are hungry to be part of a mission-driven organization—for whom changing the healthcare experience matters.
And we hire people who embody 'humbition': our term for people who are both humble and ambitious.
We’ve hired professional athletes, musicians, stage actors, scientists and street canvassers – because we recognize that great people are everywhere. We take this hunt for great people so seriously that if anyone outside of the company refers a candidate who gets hired by ZocDoc, we’ll send you an iPad.
But one question many ZocDoc’rs across the board like to ask is: what are you passionate about? Since it’s such an open-ended question, it allows candidates to answer candidly about their interests and passions.
We’ve found that it’s a good way to start the dialogue and allows us to get to know people beyond what’s listed on their resumes.
I’d describe our culture as open, casual, collaborative and lively. We have a very flat structure and an open door communication policy at ZocDoc, which has created a culture where speaking up is not only strongly encouraged but expected.
With activities like free daily lunches where we take time to sit with teammates, our company-wide rock-paper-scissors tournament, and our annual Mad Men dress-up day, we maintain an atmosphere where employees work hard but also make work fun.
